The proposal was approved and the program was launched in April, 1974 when a Center Director and Bookkeeper were hired. Operations began in July, 1974 in a 10,000 square foot space in the Victorian House building (67-16 Myrtle Avenue, 11385, a former catering house) in the Glendale area.
In 1978, Glenridge found a new site to meet its expanding needs. On March 1, 1978, Glenridge moved into its present site, 59-03 Summerfield Street, Ridgewood, Queens, New York 11385. The building is centrally located in the community with easy access to public transportation and shopping.
Also in 1986, Glenridge started its’ satellite program in the Glendale area of CD #5 in Queens. The satellite already had more than 75 seniors using the center, some of whom began at the main site, but now find the satellite location more convenient.
There was a smaller living room atmosphere at the satellite, providing a warm and more focused environment. It operated under the hard work of a group of dedicated volunteers. In 2003 the Church that owned the satellite closed its doors, we are still trying to find a site in Glendale to house a satellite.
In 1997 the center installed an elevator, thus ensuring that all seniors had access to the building. A new computer room was completed in 2002; a library and food pantry was added in 2004.
2005 marked the thirty-second anniversary of the agency. The agency has become a vital and integral part of the community, working to recognize the needs of all the seniors of the area and dedicated to providing comprehensive services with professional awareness and a recognition that each senior is an individual with unique needs.
